Certified Biosolids Qualified Assurance Scheme (BAS)

'nutri-bio' was the first company to go through and be certified under the Biosolids Assurance Scheme (BAS). BAS is owned and operated by Assured Biosolids Limited, which is a not-for-profit company set up by the 11 UK mainland Water and Sewerage Companies.

NSF Certification UK Limited has been appointed as the Certification Body to provide an annual audit service to scheme members. Whilst the scheme has been developed by the Water Industry any organisation that recycles biosolids to agriculture may apply for certification.

The scheme operates through a levy paid on entrance in to the scheme by members based on quantities of biosolids recycled to agricultural land. The result of certification of all activities (from sludge treatment to biosolids application to land) should result in Biosolids Assurance Scheme Certified Biosolids.

Assured Biosolids Limited is managed by a board of directors appointed from the 11 UK mainland Water and Sewerage Companies. The day to day administration of Assured Biosolids Limited and the Biosolids Assurance Scheme is provided by Grieve Strategic Limited.

Reassurance to the food chain

The Biosolids Assurance Scheme intends to provide reassurance to the food chain and consumers as set out in this model:

Scheme applicants will be sludge processors and biosolids recyclers to agricultural land. Whilst applicants will mainly be the UK Water and Sewerage Companies the scheme is open to all organisations where there is no duplication of audit scope.

The scope of the scheme is from treatment of sludge (including source material controls), transport, storage and application to agricultural land. The scheme does not cover applications to non-agricultural land (e.g. land reclamation).

To achieve certification members must meet all standards set out in the scheme, to ensure any Certified Biosolids are not just safe to recycle but meet a minimum uniform standard; independently verified and awarded.

'nutri-bio' not only has meet this standard it has done so at all of its Water Recycling Centres. Achieving recertification on all of it sites with no nonconformities in Summer 2016 and is proud to be a flagship member of this initiative.
